Jesus entered Jerusalem to the cheers of the crowd and the
waving of palm branches.  Before the week was out he had been
arrested, beaten, falsely accused, executed and buried.  On the
first day of the new week he rose from the dead and walked out of
his tomb.

The observation of the events of that week that changed all of
history is celebrated each year as Holy Week.  Beginning with
Palm Sunday, Holy Week includes Holy Thursday when we
observe the last supper of Jesus with his disciples, and Good
Friday, the day of the crucifixion.  The week is called “Holy” and
Good Friday is called “Good” because they speak of Jesus’
willingness to face injustice and stand strong in the face of evil
because of his unending trust in God and his unfailing love for us.

Out of the darkness of his passion and death comes the good
news on the first day of the new week that he is risen from the
dead.  Easter (a word that originally referred to the blossoming of
new life in Spring) is the most holy day of the year for Christians.

Easter is the reason we celebrate Christmas, because if Jesus
had not been raised from the dead, no one would have cared
enough to remember what happened at his birth.

Easter is the reason we have hope in times of sickness, or
danger, or war, because Easter says that though the world throws
its worst at us, and may eventually get the better of us, God not
only can raise us up, but has promised to do so.

Easter is the reason we keep trying to fight injustice and improve
living conditions for the poor and feed the hungry, because the
resurrection says to us that God did not give up on this world that
he loved so much, and that if we want to serve the God who
promises us resurrection, we should not give up either.

This year Holy Week will begin with Palm Sunday on March 16.
Our worship service at 10:00 will begin with the children’s
procession of the palms.

On Wednesday, March 19, instead of our regular church supper,
we will sit down to a Passover table at 7:00 p.m. And learn about
the traditions of the meal that Jesus and his disciples were
enjoying when he “took the bread and blessed it and gave it to
them saying, ‘This is my body given for you . . .’”

On Holy Thursday at 7:00 p.m. We will receive communion and
then spend some time “in the garden” with Jesus as he faced the
decision “Thy Will or My Will?”

On Good Friday at 7:00 p.m. We will remember Jesus’ last words
from the cross and contemplate his decision to “Save Himself or
Save the World?”

We will offer two worship services on Easter Sunday, March 23.
The early service will be at 8:00 followed by Sunday School and
the second service at 10:00.  The children will get to hunt for
Easter Eggs following the second service while the rest enjoy a
special Fellowship Time in the Hall.  There will be special music
from our choir and handbell choir at both services.
